A septic tank is a system in which sewage sludge is retained for a sufficient time for the organic matter to undergo anaerobic decomposition. This happens while the liquid elements are dispersed into the ground via perforated pipes in the soil, which is known as a soakaway method.
Cesspits
A cesspit, like a septic tank, is a collection point for both solid and liquid waste. However, cesspits do not have a soakaway system, which means that liquid waste has nowhere to go. It is therefore, purely a holding tank for waste to collect it, until it is emptied.
